Manchester is a city on the rise, and in 2023 it’s set to be transformed in ways that will make it an even more exciting place to visit and live. From the opening of a massive arena and a new luxury hotel to the arrival of world-renowned restaurants and cutting-edge cultural spaces, the city is poised for a major revitalisation.
CO-OP Live, a state-of-the-art live entertainment venue; Factory International, a 24-hour arts centre; and Lucky Cat by Gordon Ramsay, a swanky new restaurant, are all set to make Manchester a destination for culture, entertainment and dining. We also cannot forget St Michael’s, a much-anticipated office building by Gary Neville.
Exciting times are ahead! Join us as we explore the impressive improvements coming to Manchester in 2023.
Manchester’s entertainment scene gets a boost
Mancunians will have even more entertainment options from 2023. Oak View Group (OVG), the world’s largest sports and entertainment developer; City Group (CFG), the global operator of football and sports-related businesses; and Co-operative Group got together to create Co-op Live, a new entertainment venue.
The arena will have a capacity of around 23,000 people and will host a wide range of activities, including concerts, comedy shows, and sporting events. It will be located in the city centre, with easy access to public transport. Visitors will also enjoy good food and exquisite drinks in more than 30 bars, restaurants and lounges.
Factory International: a cultural destination like no other
Manchester will host the first interdisciplinary, massive cultural building in the United Kingdom: Factory International. With roughly 143,000 square feet, the venue will have space for various projects across different art forms. Visitors can expect to enjoy dance and theatre groups’ performances, concerts, operas, large-scale visual and digital arts exhibitions, and pop culture events.
The ambitious project intends to help Manchester and the North of England deliver a thriving cultural alternative to London. Factory International comprises three main internal areas: the ground floor, warehouse (with a 5,000-people capacity) and auditorium (capable of seating 1,600 visitors). They are complemented by larger spaces inside and outside the facility.
Factory International has received a 24-hour licence, meaning visitors can buy alcohol on its premises until 4 am every night of the year.
Gordon Ramsay’s 1930s Tokyo-inspired Lucky Cat is making its way to Manchester
The Lucky Cat, a restaurant by Gordon Ramsay, is coming to Manchester, with the new location taking over the former HSBC Bank at the top of King Street. The first Lucky Cat opened in London’s Mayfair in 2019, serving Asian-inspired small plates and grilled dishes. A raw bar also offers sushi and sashimi options. Furthermore, the restaurant boasts a range of Japanese gins and over 50 sakes, along with wine, beer, whisky, and innovative cocktails. Considering that its London branch has retained three Michelin stars since 2021, the stakes in Manchester couldn’t be higher.
Maya: New Bar and Restaurant Offering Modern European Classics
Food lovers will be happy to learn that Manchester is gearing up for a fantastic year in 2023. In addition to Lucky Cat, the city will also celebrate the arrival of Maya, a bar and restaurant offering modern European classics.
A canal-side brasserie space and a lower ground-floor dining room will feature a menu that focuses on locally sourced and seasonal ingredients. The venue will be at 40 Chorlton Street, a 20th-century warehouse building that houses the newly opened LEVEN hotel.
Its interiors will merge the original industrial nature of the space with references to the art deco era in surprising ways.
Maya was conceived by a team of hospitality experts who have worked for well-known brands like Soho House, Isabel Mayfair and Michelin-starred Petersham Nurseries.
Mancunian chef Gabe Lea, who has previously worked at Michelin-starred establishments like Le Manoir and The French at The Midland Hotel, will be responsible for impressing clients.
St Michael’s: The Ultimate Urban Oasis
St Michael’s, the highly anticipated new development in the city’s heart, is set to revolutionise how we experience urban living. The project, masterminded by Gary Neville, will transform the old Booth Street Police Station into a stunning mixed-use development featuring 191 hotel rooms, a rooftop restaurant capable of hosting 900 guests, and 185,000 sq ft of commercial space spread across nine floors.
But St Michael’s isn’t just about fine dining and luxury accommodations. The development will also feature a brand new public space, St Michael’s Square, that promises to be a vibrant and dynamic addition to the city.
